Recorded live from the Martin Theater in Panama City (FL) for public radio station WKGC, Lucky Mud's latest CD is a showcase of original contemporary folk music that's pure down-home Americana. With only acoustic guitar backing, husband and wife duo Mike and Maggie McKinney trade off lead vocal duties over the course of 16 songs that range from Mike's beautifully melancholic "Evangeline," to Maggie's wonderful show-closer, "Ride the Pony." Opening with the infectious "Radio Intro," a short ditty for the host station that's a throw-back to old-time live radio programs, Lucky Mud sets the tone for a set long on heartfelt narratives of simple joys and bittersweet truths. Maggie's "Mississippi Queen," with its bluesy refrain, and Mike's "Born to Honky-Tonk," a Jerry Jeff Walker-ish tune complete with yodels, hint at Lucky Mud's musical reach, but it's the duo's milk-and-honey harmonies – as on the aching ballad, "Silver Spoon" – that wraps their sound up into one neat package. Presumably the 1st of a series, Lucky Mud's "Live at the Martin Theater, Vol. 1" CD is a terrific mix of tuneful and meaningful folk songs as rich as the American musical traditions they reflect.

Classic power-trio rock driven by the kind of fiery and blistering guitar flourishes that defines the genre is the order of the day on The Leftovers fine new CD, "Reheat and Serve." Alternately flashing the kind of licks a fan of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, or Stevie Ray Vaughan would drool over, veteran rocker D. Logan Foster leads a 3-piece band through a 9-song workout of blues fire and rock dynamics with drama and flair. With wife Cassandra Roxanne (Bass) and Bennie Bee (drums) proving a rock-solid and inventive rhythm section, classic blues rock gets a makeover on the Santana-inflected "Simple Woman" while the Southern chug of "Your Eyes Give You Away" are right out of the Lynyrd Skynyrd playbook. CD-opener, "Let's Do It Again" surges with a Hendrix-like fury as Foster's slashing chops cuts through the song like lightning bolts. Originally released in 1976, "Red Letter Day" by Tom Lucas is a CD packed with the truest form of American Rock. Lucas' lyrics deal with the never-ending political issues of our time and don't hold back on his sentiments. Close your eyes and listen to Lucas' vocals as they are pure, crisp, and simple, whereas you might even think you are hearing Neil Young. "Babylon Rising" is piano-driven with an energetic Blues/Rock tonality. "Pick Your Face Up Off The Floor : The Remixes" by electronic/funk artist Farrad, is a collection of 12 unique dance remixes of the title song, and includes the bonus track, "Praise 2 The DJ." Although the album primarily fits into the dance or techno genre, the influence of 80's rock and pop as well as hip-hop and R&B are a part of the mix. The tracks move from steady beats to ecstatic ones to slower ones, but all charge the listener to get up and dance their heart out. The "Ron Kurti Remix" is particularly unique in that it has the bass line of good Detroit house, but also features the mesmerizing influence of DJ Tiesto which, when brought together, makes for a high energy dance track - for all of six minutes. "Del Castillo" by Del Castillo (Latin Artist from Texas(TX))

The Latin Rock fusion band Del Castillo and their self-titled album is a thorough blend of styles from all around Latin America and Spain coupled with sultry, romantic, and even tragic lyrics. All thirteen tracks will pull the listener into dramatic sounds of flamenco guitars and the lively beats of conga and bongo drums. "Boricua del Cielo" is a flamenco salsa crossover that opens the CD giving a perfect introduction to the style of this band. The song speaks of an enchanting woman who seems to have 'magic' in the way that she dances. The harmony in this track brings a lot of life to the lyrics and it's near impossible to not dance or at least want to when listening. "Anybody Wanna" is a Spanglish cumbia-rock combo that has an easy going sound throughout the track, but invites the listener to dance at the same time. A standard drum set is prominent in this track and the lead singer's strong vocal range is fully showcased. Where the Gypsy Kings and Los Lonely Boys met is where Del Castillo was created. This is a CD that can and will be enjoyed by aficionados of multiple musical tastes.

Tony Ocean doles out skill and passion with his new CD, "Me and Mrs. Jones." While his cover of the Billy Paul classic is well done and worthy of being a title track, the Robbie Robertson-penned "Out of the Blue" provides Ocean with the perfect canvas for the kind of deep and soulful delivery the song demands. This album stays nothing but smooth throughout, but still holds some edge and emotion with Ocean's strong vocals. "Someone Like You" has all the elements this album is about: passion, beautiful piano, and catchy melodies. Another gem is the last track, "Be Honest," a duet with a female singer. Tony Ocean's fine CD, "Me and Mrs. Jones," is easy listening anyone can enjoy.

"I Stand Alone" by No Phear (Reggae Artost from New York(NY))

"I Stand Alone" by up and coming Reggae/Dancehall artist No Phear is very fitting for the modern, more urban turn that both the Reggae and Dancehall genres are making these days. This album makes use of fresh Hip-Hop beats while the artist raps in his native Jamaican dialect or patois. The deep and slow track "Mama Love" is inspired by the artist's mother and while it is very emotional, it sticks to the solid beats. "Da Wah Dah" is a very danceable dancehall track featuring artists Marlon and Pink Bling that will make the listener want to play it over and over again because of its catchy hook. "Eyez On Me" is another dancehall tune, reminiscent of Sean Paul, that makes an innovative use of voice machine effects over a progressive beat; it's impossible to not move at least one part of your body when this track on. The Reggae and Dancehall styles are transforming and this album is a prime, well-done example of that. Warning! This album contains Explicit Content.

Hugh Jarvis Hitchcock and his debut CD, "Funkmeister" is an album that spans fluently across many genres. At some moments it's urban and jazzy, other times it's 80's music with some world beat flare. Female vocals, keyboards, and a drum machine make for some smooth, catchy, and fun songs. The album is best represented by the track, "Out of Control," as it has a fast paced world drum beat, jazzy saxophone, and a funky bass line that really moves. The stand out single is "All I Know" as this song offers a slower moving beat with soft and sweet vocals. "Funkmeister" will surprise you at every turn, from its ever-changing genre, to samples of George W. Bush speeches and is definitely a great album to hear if you're looking for a variety of music with vibrant rhythms.

"Island Ecstasy," the new CD from Frank Tuma, is designed to transport us all to the warm Caribbean Islands. It is an instrumental album replete with all the variety of Caribbean style percussive instruments, guitars, and piano, accompanied with a heavy emphasis upon the upbeat and expressive steel drum. On the first track, "Caribbean Dancing," there is a quick and excited beat over which we hear talented steel drumming played at a speed that will baffle and excite the ears. "A Bit of Africa in the Caribbean" is a song that lives up to its title as it is a cool blend of African and Island drum sounds, with flutes and steel drums doing the singing. For the song, "Living My Dreams," Frank slows it down a little and uses his island rhythms as a relaxant. Whether you are already a fan of the sounds of the Caribbean Islands, or appreciate when an album attempts to mentally transport you to another place, then you should give the "Island Ecstasy" CD a try.

"Studio 71" is a catchy and comfortable Pop album by the talented singer/songwriter LUCIA. Her very natural Jazzy voice is supported by R&B instrumentation with Pop and Rock flavors. The songs, "All of It" and "Ball of Hypocrisy" show off her more upbeat and catchy side. But she also shows her soft side with delicate tracks like "Dream You Alive" and "A Little More Time." It is always refreshing to hear an artist who can play an instrument as well as sing. LUCIA excels with her piano accompaniments and angelic vocals on her debut album, "Studio 71" which is why this CD is a must have addition for fans of fresh and original Pop music.

The debut album, "Last Round" by Joe Genuardi is a fresh and well made "piano man" album. Genuardi has a strong, clean voice and can play the "ivories" like the best of them. His lyrics don't sound trite or half-baked, like you occasionally find with others in this genre. From the title track, "Last Round" Genuardi shouts out to the men he obviously pulls influence from: Elton John and Billy Joel. His songs range from the upbeat and uplifting "Time Goes On" all the way to bleeding heart ballads like "Show Me the Way." Joe Genuardi has produced an excellent Adult Alternative/Pop album in "Last Round" that has at least one song for everyone.

"New Life" is the third gospel reggae release from impressive writer/composer duo Errol and Kaye Leslie. Originally from Jamaica, but currently taking up residence in Florida, Errol and Kaye smoothly incorporate Caribbean reggae rhythms into their gospel songs for their music ministries. The result is twelve upbeat and rhythmic tracks about the importance of Jesus in our day to day existence and the necessity of putting one's life into God's hands. Errol and Kaye, combined with the backing vocalists, create some great vocal dynamics on this album. Errol has a great booming bass reggae vocal, and Kaye a strong alto more lenient to the gospel end of the sound. "New Life" features great production quality. It sounds very clean and makes you feel as though you are in a Caribbean tent revival. "Caribbean Gospel Medley" defines Caribbean gospel perfectly with an attention-getting beat, great vocal layering, and lyrics about redemption. The title track, "New Life," is an Elvis-esque southern gospel track with great booming doo-wop vocals from Errol, more great vocal layering, and a classic arrangement. Overall, "New Life" is an accomplishment, as it combines the fun, upbeat sounds of the Caribbean with serious and heartfelt gospel lyrics. If the fusion of reggae with gospel appeals to you, I strongly recommend that you check out Errol and Kaye Leslie.

Pianist Lee Michaels has recently released his debut CD "My Life" which blends the soul of Motown with a touch of classic rock. Hailing from New Jersey you would expect to hear something in the manner of rockers Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi. However, Michaels serenades the listener with songs like "The Rain Will See Us Through" which is extremely influenced by the early sounds of Elton John. Michaels belts out some R&B with the song "Believe" with a nice balance between the electric piano and vocals. Although the disc is sung in Spanish, any listener will want to hear Ephrem's crisp and clean vocals and the strong and solid rhythm section. The CD opens up to an upbeat start with the lounge grooves of the song "Tequero." Ephrem also gives the listener a few options as he displays two wonderful versions of his song "Ella." One version is a saucy salsa mix while the other has a mid-90's light rock tone to it. "Latin Evolution" is a great addition to any fans of Latin music and is well worth hearing.

Family fun and entertainment is just what Lanny Sherwin delivers on his newest CD, "Meltdown." Although geared towards children between the ages of 4-12, everyone will enjoy these wonderful pop songs, with their catchy melodies and lightly sprinkled country influences. Sherwin's lyrics are as encouraging & wise as they are humorous. For instance, in the title track, "Meltdown," he effectively sings about anger & connects to his young listeners with the wisdom of his advice. Lively and upbeat, "Granny's Got a Guitar" is not only funny but has a catchy, rock feel to it. "A Cappella, Part 3" shines with its fantastic harmonies in a song that celebrates the life of a musician. Sherwin has a gifted insight into the mind of a child and he uses his music to inspire a positive attitude, but it's his motto that really sums up his ability to relate to his audience on their level: "Don't Drive Parents Crazy." "Change Up" by Lefty Blues Band (Blues/Country Artist from Florida (FL))

Lefty Blues Band, a Florida-based outfit steeped in R&B and roots-based Americana, conjures less the Sunshine State than dark swamplands and backwoods roadhouses on their fine debut album, "Change Up." Led by brothers John & Greg Bell, this 6-piece band is as equally adept with a deep South blues ("All For You") as a George Jones-inspired ballad ("Slow Love Song"), but for the most part carves out a classic rock sound that hovers between John Hiatt & Dire Straits; that is, displaying the former's all-inclusive grasp of Americana, while reflecting the latter's ability to fashion something completely new from tried and true forms. Highlights include the above mentioned "All For You," with its atmospheric Hammond organ and Gospel-like female chorus, as well as the moving "The Rush," a perfect hybrid of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger piano balladry. But in truth, there are no weak songs among these 10 original performances. Lefty Blues Band's new release "Change Up" is a terrific representation of Americana rock that embraces its roots, and fans of Leonard Cohen and Mark Knopfler will definitely enjoy it.

Seasoned performer Gene Hilbert's latest release, "Larger Prey," is a collection of original music fused with classic rock, jazz, and blues. A one-man show, Hilbert not only is the vocalist and guitarist but also has creatively performed every other instrument. The album's high-quality production is heard in each track, and each track is arranged with excellent distinction between instruments and vocals. Subtle bell sounds and horns complement the razor sharp guitar on "Morning 20." Harmonic guitars highlight the moving piece "March to Baghdad" as it takes on a sound of its own. Vocals are low and clean while the harmonies are perfectly layered on "Talk To Me." Hilbert has taken different musical styles and has compiled a wonderful selection of songs with powerful guitar melodies. "Left for Dead" by Refracture (Electronic Artist from England)

House music is a mystifyingly multitude of Electronica / Dance music with numerous degrees of specialization and nuances. Beats Per Minute (BPM), textural definition and use / non-use of vocals are but a few of the defining characteristics that divide such subgenres of House as Dirty House, French House, and Electro House. Refracture's 3-song CD EP, "Left for Dead," blends elements of different subgenres - most notably Electro House - meaning, the music has the requisite BPM's, is anchored by propulsive bass lines, and features the sonic balance / blend associated with the House styles. All 3 tracks are catchy, infectious, and danceable as all get-out (i.e., very danceable indeed!). The title track, "Left for Dead" kicks things off with a slow-build synth swirl that hesitates before exploding into an irresistible groove punctuated by sonic squeaks and squalls that drop out of nowhere, keeping the mix continuously fresh. "Space Riot" and "Energy Flow" are both more immediate and insistent, but no less engaging, and each makes a case for being the best of the 3 mixes on the CD. If you're a House music connoisseur you will make up your own mind about the House attributes and qualifications of Refracture's "Left for Dead" EP, but if you're an Electronica music fan I think you'll find this CD delivers where it counts: on the dance floor.

This album rocks hard with the foot-stomping opener "About a Savior," and continues with such melodic tracks as "Come Follow Me" and "Promises" that feature catchy guitar riffs and memorable choruses. Also noteworthy are the moving ballads such as the uplifting "I Believe" and the heartening "In Your Hands," where Wright's vocal abilities are on full display. The energetic "Miracle" is a fitting closer, as Wright hopes to touch lives as he conveys his positive, encouraging message through his music. Fans of Contemporary Christian Rock should definitely give "Mark II" a listen.

"Lucky Guy" by Roy Jay (Folk Artist from Florida(FL))

Who said you can't judge a book or CD by its cover? Roy Jay's debut album "Lucky Guy" embodies the relaxed beach tone feeling depicted in his cover artwork. There are twists on this traditional upbeat folk music throughout this disc with tracks like "In and Out of Dreams" where hand-percussion and acoustic guitar are complimented by harmonious background vocals with sing along style. Although mostly leaning towards lighter atmospheres, "Time's Page," takes a ballad approach where subtlety and style come into play nicely. The musicianship is sophisticated and mature, but Jay doesn't take himself too seriously during "Prettiest Girl in Wal-Mart" with a comical trip to the super-store. Get out your sun block as "Lucky Guy" is Americana wrapped up in a beach towel and ready to hit the sand.

Put on your dancing shoes and let the vibrant and upbeat salsa rhythms sweep you away on "Llegó Mi Hora." Solo artist, Nelson Llompart gives an outstanding performance with his suave and sophisticated vocals. The production quality is great, as the vocals are crisp and clean while the instruments enhance the melodic arrangements. "Enamorados Por Siempre" displays a horn section which gives this pulsating tune an added uplifting pizzazz. Feel the bouncy beats of the percussion on "Búscandote" as they play in rhythmic time. Let the syncopated rhythms on "Chica Bye Bye" groove from the top of your head to your tapping toes. Nelson Llompart's "Llegó Mi Hora" is a must-have addition for any aficionado of the bold and vibrant salsa rhythms.

The sophomore effort from Central Florida's power trio "The Teague Stefan Band" entitled "Game Of Life" combines elements of blues, rock, and funk to create a highly original, fresh sound. The album is a collection of aggressive, pounding tracks full of intoxicating heart and soul. Teague Stefan, the gifted songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for this trio, employs his talents in both musicianship and composition. The songs are well-written and performed with an enthusiasm and spirit that shines through on each track. "The Leavin' Blues" is a blistering opener, with a strong groove and blazing guitar work. The production is raw and natural, with no post-production trickery. Stefan's dominating guitar is accompanied by drums that are upfront in the mix, providing a powerful, hammering sound. "Tell You Truthful" is a driving shuffle tune with an expressive strut and swagger. "Power Of A Woman" is a soulful blues tune, showcasing Stefan's vocal range as well as his mastery of the guitar. Another highlight is "High Maintenance Woman," which features a passionate performance of emotional vocals and energetic acoustic guitar. "Dues" is a great closer, a straight-ahead rocker that is radio-ready. This is a polished group of songs that will be enjoyed by any fan of rock and blues in the vein of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, or Buddy Guy.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Rosalina Vega with a GrIndie Award for the CD "He Is Here"

"He Is Here" is a great praise & worship album from Panamanian gospel vocalist and songwriter Rosalina Vega. Vega delivers with an inspiring and heartfelt vocal performance and a great range that breeches the operatic, similar to the vocals of Dionne Warwick. On the majority of the tracks, Vega's vocal is solely accompanied by traditional, though skillful, piano arrangements crafted by pianist Michael Andrews. These simple arrangements bring the message of her words to the forefront which is, simply, praising God through song. "He Is Here" has four Vega originals and six traditional hymns and worship songs, and she sings each song beautifully, with immense inspiration and an open heart. The album is well recorded and creates a nice balance between the vocals, piano, and gospel message. "I Give My Heart" is a Vega original with nice piano work and inspiring, heartfelt lyrics about giving it all to Jesus. "Forever More" is a spiritual track with a soothing arrangement and hopeful lyrics about the afterlife. Her variations on traditional songs, including her operatic, multilingual rendition of "O Glorious Love" and her beautiful rendition of the standard hymn, "I Surrender All," are also noteworthy. "He Is Here" is a great album with an inspiring message, and should be looked into by anyone who enjoys praise & worship music and great female vocalists.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Freedom Hawk with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Sunlight"

"Sunlight" is the excellent full-length debut from Virginia hard rock outfit Freedom Hawk. This group is solid. Driven by powerful drum beats and excellently crafted guitar work, Freedom Hawk have composed nine exceptional hard rock tracks that dabble in metal and psychedelic and have a certain timeless quality to them. Attributing to this timelessness is the lead singer's vocal performance. His melodic high-pitched vocals are reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne with traces of Robert Plant. The songs are a lot of fun, meant to be played loud, and will immediately have you either bobbing your head or using your lap as a drum kit. "Sunlight" is well-produced, clean and ready to boom out of a pair of speakers. The title track, "Sunlight," is a fun track with a great rocking arrangement that gets your head bobbing and features some great drum and guitar work. "Going Down" is a stripped down track with a slow drum beat and minimal guitar work that displays the fantastic vocal capabilities of the lead singer. "Sunlight" takes us back to a time where making hard rock wasn't about making a lot of noise but rather about making very good music. Freedom Hawk have crafted a gem, and fans of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and classic hard rock are going to want to pick this one up.

"Mother Earth and Father Time" by Trance Fury (Electronica Artist from North Carolina(NC))

Get ready to hit the clubs when you hear "Mother Earth and Father Time" a recently released CD by Trance Fury. The pulsating rhythms and key synth melodies will no doubt put you in your Friday night dance mood. "Mother Earth" and "Painted Desert" are the selections that really get you moving, as they both feature some great beats and tranced-out bass hits. This album stands alone in the trance genre though as Trance Fury gives listeners a taste of some easy listening style numbers-that is if you can even call a trance CD easy listening. Songs like "Your Savior is Coming" and "Carolina Shore" are pulled way back on the tempo scale and also feature some saturated guitar tones. Although "Mother Earth and Father Time" isn't your average 70 minutes of raving trance CD, it is a great disc and will be loved by any fan of the genre.

"Note-ified" by Mike Ringler (Rock Artist from Florida(FL))

The sounds of the late 1960's psychedelic movement are still alive and well! Don't believe us? Well, just listen to "Note-ified" the latest release by Mike Ringler and you may reconsider your answer. The CD opens with that staple fuzz guitar tone on the song "You Can Shine," a track that also features vocal work very reminiscent of The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. Ringler also delves into the British sounds made popular by The Beatles and The Hollies with songs such as "Hope" and "We Know You're Right." There is also an excellent guitar solo on "Words Through Time," which has a cool Moody Blues effect to it. All in all, "Note-ified" screams of "flower power" and is a great album for any fan of that wildly colorful era.
